Finding the Missing Link in an Interview Answer
Many answers contain a true story but skip the sentence that connects that story to the interviewer's question. The gap sounds like a detail problem even when the real issue is relevance.
Make the connection explicit
Write the question in one line. Under it, write the result you want the interviewer to remember. Then identify the one decision or action that caused that result. If the action is missing, the answer needs one more sentence before the result.
Test the answer with a follow-up
- Ask what changed after your action.
- Ask how you knew the change mattered.
- Ask what you would repeat under pressure.
Those three follow-ups expose a missing bridge faster than polishing the opening.
